Is Biodiesel just a mixture of Vegetable oil and Alcohol?NO and yes. Biodiesel is made through the Chemical Reaction of Vegetable oil and Alcohol with a catalyst of Alkaline such as potassium hydroxide KoH, or sodium hydroxide NaoH. The molecular structure of the veg. oil is broken and hydrocarbons from the alcohol join in to the new chemical compound. The Catalyst (alkaline) then falls out of solution in the biodiesel and is in solution in a separated (split) Glycerin at a ratio of about 1 part Glycerin to 5 parts Biodiesel. The byproduct of making biodiesel. This Glycerin saturated with alkaline is Soap. |
